Movie review: London Dreams

Movie review: London DreamsSocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Take a bow, the rockstars arrive

In Bollywood, everyone likes to be called a “Rockstar”. I have always wondered what does “Rockstar” mean for Bollywood, but I am still in utter confusion. Sanju Baba is a rockstar because he went to jail so many times, Sallu is a rock star because he drove his car over few poor people sleeping on the street, Fardeen Khan is a rockstar because he was caught with drugs. Basically, any doper, smoker is called a rockstar in Bollywood. This movie takes this obsession to another level by projecting two forty plus men with sagging cheeks and who can’t sing for their lives as rockstars.

Vipul Shah calls this movie a musical Sholay and compares it to Mamma Mia. Any movie with two male leads automatically becomes some kind of Sholay, I guess. And then there is an article about this movie being inspired by the legendary rivalry between Mozart and Salieri. I mean, how full of crap. Read the excuse for a plot and then you will understand what I mean. If you really want to see a good movie based on their rivalry watch Amadeus.

The music of self proclaimed musicals like this one should have been great. But the music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy is an average fair and is put down by inane lyrics penned by Prasoon Joshi. Sample this – “Man ko ati bhave saiyyan, kare ta tha thaiya”

Salman Khan with his accent irritates like never before. The character of Mannu essayed by him is one hell of an idiotic portrayal. Ajay Devgn does not suit the role at all. This would go down in history as his second worst performance after RGV ki Aag.

And what is Asin doing in the movie? Which rock band has a female dancer in the background doing stupid dance moves? I guess in a world where Sallu and Ajay Devgn play rockstars anything is possible. The sidey actors are in the movie just as fillers. No one registers any presence.

The movie is one bad experience. The rock concert in London and other European cities looks so phony. Even if London was full of Gujjus and Pakistanis, their number would not be sufficient to fill up the Wembley stadium.

Verdict: Sometimes a movie is so bad that it is good. This movie is not that bad.

Disclaimer: I have not seen the movie.
